This beautiful Owl tile is inspired by an ancient Greek coin (ca. 450 BCE) honoring the goddess Athena. As the goddess of wisdom, she is often represented by the little owl (athene noctura). The owl symbolizes knowledge, wisdom, and victory. Her temple, the Parthenon, still stands in the city of Athens named in her honor. The coin on which this tile is based is a silver tetradrachman and was first minted around 480 BCE. The Greek letters AOE are an abbreviation which translate as "of the Athenians"
The tile measures about 4 1/4 inches square and is about 3/8 inches thick. There is a notch on the back which enables you to hang it on a wall. My tiles are frost proof stoneware. They are hand-pressed and hand-glazed and no two are exactly alike. I hope you enjoy displaying them as much as I enjoy making them.
